Project Prevent

Safe*PLACE

Schools Prioritizing, Listening, Assessing, Counseling, and Engaging

Project Prevent Safe*PLACE is a five-year federally funded grant with the intention to support schools as they build a new, sustainable mental health support system that targets all students at the appropriate level.  The project goal is for ALL students to learn in a safe, trusting, trauma-sensitive school environment.  The purpose is to increase the school’s capacity to identify, assess, and serve students exposed to pervasive violence, help offered affected students mental health services for trauma or anxiety, and reduce the likelihood these students will later commit violent acts.  The grant serves 121 schools and more than 54,700 students across 13 districts. Nine mental health professionals will be embedded in the participating districts to support identified students/families with mental health. The school counselor role will be repurposed over the five years of the grant with a goal of up to 80% of their time in direct services around students’ mental health, well-being, and social-emotional learning. The grant will partner with community-based mental health organizations to collaborate and expand services while assisting schools in developing systems to help identify and intervene with students around mental health.  Students will be assessed annually using a mental health assessment/screener where they will be placed in Tiers and targeted for additional support as needed.  Additionally, training and quality supports will be provided to staff in the areas of Youth Mental Health Frist Aid (YMHFA) and Trauma Informed Care (TIC).

Overall Project Prevent Safe*PLACE Goal:  ALL students will learn in a safe, trusting, trauma-sensitive school environment.
